So, a friend asked last night to hold my hand at dinner… I won’t say names, but lets call her Niko Starchick. I thought she was just wanting to have a moment, but in fact she wanted to see if my hand was still hot from the mad texting I was doing at the table. Ouch, burn, zing-zang. If this lets you know anything about me, its that my phone is either right with me or lost…. or oddly enough in a body of water. As Popeye would say, I yam what I yam–a cellphone addict. Its ok, my Jack (my g-sauce/grandmother) is too.
While I might be an extreme case, as I don’t even know the time of day without my phone or iPod, I feel that I am not alone. And when I think about it, on my BlackBerry, actually making phone calls is the last thing I do. So what do I do???
First and foremost, I use my phone for text messaging. I would say on the average day I send between 50-100 texts a day. Now, typing this, that number seems absurd, and it might be, but its true. I also BBM (BlackBerry Messenger) which is a more digitally formatted style of texting. On this, you can see when your text was delivered and read. So, if a certain someone is just ignoring you–they are just ignoring you. You can also set your status to ‘Busy’ so people like me don’t feel the cold breeze that that little ‘R’ and no response sometimes sends. I can also send pictures to my BBM friends, which I cannot do on text, because my mom’s cheap.
Email is another great aspect of my BlackBerry. I get to see all those lovely emails that the GSC sends pronto. It really comes in handy when teachers email you too. Heck, I can even respond when the mood strikes.
Other than text and email, I use my BlackBerry as a radio. Although I do not have many apps, one I do use is Pandora-which everyone should know about from last class. If my heart desired, I could even download one of the songs onto my phone. I also, Google like a madwoman and check Facebook from time to time. Google comes in handy. For instance, at lunch today, we couldnt think of that movie that Brit Murphy and Michael Douglas were in where Brit is a crazy girl. My friend Niko Starchick, the ever helpful kind, Googled, and found out it was Don’t Say a Word–talk about a clutch app.
I hope my little tangent has been helpful to my readers as to what I am doing when my phone is in my hand besides checking the time.
Oh, I almost forgot–sometimes I call people, and occasionally I’ve been known to answer. Nothing ticks me off more than a voicemail. So, please….just shoot me a text!

Lynn,
You are hilarious! I love the code name…I might start calling ****** Niko! And, I will agree, you are the ever texting machine who has mad skills. I loved your post and love how we all seem to use our phones now for everything BUT calling people. (Oh, and I’m glad I texted you today instead of voicemail!)

Lynn,
When did you start monitoring my cell phone habits? I am exactly the same way! Calling? That is SOO 1990′s. After having my BlackBerry, there is absolutely no way I can go back to a phone that doesn’t have e-mail functionality. Being able to get e-mails from professors has been a boon, and it’s always nice to be the one to tell my friends when class is canceled or something else important is going on.
